The story is narrated by a rural teacher who recalls a series of strange events in a northern German village on the eve of World War I. A doctor is injured after tripping over a rope while riding home, and an investigation is immediately launched. Meanwhile, a pastor administers corporal punishment to two children who returned late and ties them with white ribbons, symbolizing purity. The next day, a peasant's wife dies in an accident, and the teacher finds a boy named Martin walking at a height by the river, who claims he wants to know if God intends to punish him. The teacher meets the baron's housekeeper, Eva, and they leave a good impression on each other. Soon, the baron presides over a harvest festival, and the deceased woman's son believes the baron is responsible for his mother's death, leading him to vandalize the baron's vegetable garden out of anger. All these malicious events' potential instigator remains undiscovered, with arson and beatings of children still occurring. The following year, after Archduke Ferdinand is assassinated, the teacher seems to uncover some clues but is forcefully stopped by the pastor. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and the FIPRESCI Prize.
