DJay (Terrence Dashon Howard) is a pimp who spends his days in a car with a prostitute named Nola (Taryn Manning), finding life to be incredibly dull and deeply feeling the weight of a midlife crisis. During a black market deal, DJay buys a cartoon electronic piano, which rekindles memories of his days in the choir. He learns that hip-hop superstar Kenan Black (Ludacris) will hold a concert on July 4th. He hopes to record his own demo to send to this hip-hop icon. Thus, DJay begins to form a band, reaching out to old choir friends like Kay (Anthony Anderson), a white pianist named Blair, and a pregnant woman named Shug (Taraji P. Henson) for help, gradually working towards his dream. He transforms his experiences of a lower-class life into lyrics and wins over the media and music fans with his passionate performances. However, just as he is on the verge of becoming a star, he unexpectedly lands in jail due to a bizarre lawsuit...
