Charlie (Lee Marvin) and Lee (Clu Gulager) are contract killers who work for money. After they eliminate their target Johnny (John Cassavetes), they start to doubt this simple business that seems almost unbelievable. Driven by curiosity, Charlie and Lee begin to investigate Johnny's background and find out that he was once a somewhat famous race car driver, whose career ended due to an accident on the track. As their investigation deepens, a woman named Sheila (Angie Dickinson) comes to light; she is the mistress of mob boss Browning (Ronald Reagan) and is intricately connected to the murdered Johnny. Gradually, Charlie and Lee discover that they have fallen into a deep vortex from which they cannot escape.
