Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is an unknown actor struggling in small theater productions and soap operas. Recently, he had a falling out with his agent George Fields (Sydney Pollack), who refuses to help him find investment for his next play and believes that he will never find work again. To raise money to perform the script written by his roommate Jeff (Bill Murray), Michael disguises himself as a woman and adopts the name Dorothy Michaels. He hears from his female friend Sandy (Teri Garr) about an audition for a television show and successfully lands a role as a character named Kimberly. He hits it off with the show's lead actress Julie Nichols (Jessica Lange), even winning over her father. However, Julie is unaware of Dorothy's true gender. Michael gradually realizes that Julie’s boyfriend, the show's director Ron, does not truly love her, and he himself starts to develop feelings for Julie. The character Michael portrays becomes a sensation, but he also struggles with the fact that more and more men are falling for him...
