Henry Barthes (Adrien Brody) comes to a community school as a substitute teacher. The school is on the brink of collapse due to student rebellion and mismanagement, and a group of teachers led by Doris (Lucy Liu) is suffering immensely. Henry's first class is met with provocation from unruly students, but he skillfully diffuses the situation. He wins the admiration of the female teacher, Sasha (Christina Hendricks). At the same time, his teaching methods pique the interest of the students, including Meredith, who struggles with obesity. She has silently endured various insults and mockery due to her weight. However, because of the teacher, she seems to find reasons for everything... But Henry actually carries a lot of pressure within himself; his grandfather is on his deathbed, and the shadow of his mother's suicide lingers in his mind. One night, he is lost in sorrow on a bus, crying alone. This moment is witnessed by a young prostitute, Erica (Sami Gayle), who has just been abused by a client. She follows him, hoping to receive his help. Initially, he refuses her request, but he eventually takes her back to his bachelor apartment...
