In 1989, in New York, filmmaker Jennie Livingston documented the extravagant scenes of the underground ball culture in "Paris is Burning." The film is a chic nightclub fashion piece and a comforting home for those who have been kicked out of their houses for bravely pursuing their true selves, including gay and transgender individuals. Despite being overshadowed by the heavy burdens of AIDS and prejudice, "Paris is Burning" still brings us a feast of glamour and passion, dreams and desires. It leads the lost to continue forward without fear, to shine while critically examining themselves, and to boldly be themselves against societal norms.
