This documentary is based on footage shot by wildlife activist Timothy Treadwell from 1999 to 2003 in Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska, USA. Treadwell dedicated himself to the study and protection of wild grizzly bears starting in 1989, co-founding the "Bear Warrior Association" with friends. Each summer, he camped alone in Katmai, observing and documenting the behaviors of grizzly bears, while voluntarily educating thousands of school children, advocating against poaching, and raising awareness to protect grizzlies. Director Werner Herzog visited Treadwell's parents and ex-girlfriend, conducting detailed interviews about the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard in October 2003, attempting to explore what drove Treadwell to forsake humanity and dedicate his life to grizzlies while showcasing his extraordinary experiences. The film was nominated for the Documentary Jury Prize and the Alfred P. Sloan Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and won Best Documentary Awards from various organizations including the 2005 Independent Spirit Awards, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Circle, and the National Society of Film Critics.
