After the mother of young Maki Haruto (voiced by Haruto Yamakawa) perishes in a fire, he forms a new family with his father Maki Shōichi (voiced by Takuya Kimura) and his stepmother Natsuko (voiced by Yoshino Kimura). Deep in sorrow, Haruto becomes gloomy and reclusive, struggling to adapt to his new environment. By chance, he follows a talking heron (voiced by Masaki Suda) into an abandoned mysterious tower, only to unexpectedly enter a fantastical "spirit world" and begin an incredible adventure... The film's title pays homage to the novel of the same name published by the author Genjiro Yoshino in 1937, but the story of the movie is original from Hayao Miyazaki.
