In the summer of 2002, Mizusawa Megumi (played by Takeuchi Yuko), a graduate student in impact crater morphometry at Hokkaido University, is about to graduate. After listening to a speech by the head of the External Cooperation Division at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Hideo Nikaido (played by Nishida Toshiyuki), about satellites in outer space, she becomes particularly excited, and her insights and knowledge catch Nikaido's attention. Soon after, Mizusawa is invited by Nikaido to intern at the research institute. At this time, the Japanese space team led by Sakamoto Kenichi (played by Takashima Masahiro) is focused on developing a small probe called MUSES-C. They plan to launch the probe to collect samples from an asteroid beyond the distance equivalent to a round trip between Earth and the Sun, a seemingly simple task that faces unimaginable and insurmountable difficulties.
