West Africa is still in the post-colonial era, and the French government is eager to withdraw from the continent. Although soldiers retreat in haste, they do not spare Maria's (Isabelle Huppert) plantation, as it is rumored that the rebel leader—a boxer (Issach De Bankole)—is hiding there. The flames of war are brought here, coinciding with the coffee harvest. The black laborers working for Maria have vanished to escape the turmoil. Her ex-husband André (Christopher Lambert), who once shared the African dream with Maria, has long moved on to a new love. André has married a local black woman, has children, and is secretly planning to sell the plantation. With home at risk, Maria suddenly discovers her lazy only son Manuel (Nicolas Duvauchelle) has shaved his head, is riding a motorcycle, and wants to join the rebels. On the scorching land, it seems that Maria is fighting alone...
