A censor is imprisoned for manslaughter, and after being released, he wanders to Paris. One day, a stranger gives him 200 francs. Initially, he refuses to take the money because he knows he can't pay it back. The stranger tells him to return the money to a certain church and give it to "Little Thérèse" (symbolizing Sister Teresa) when he's able to do so, and only then will he accept the money.
