At Africa's highest peak — Mount Kilimanjaro, amidst the white snow lies the corpse of a leopard. What is it searching for? Harry (Gregory Peck) is a writer, currently recuperating at the foot of Kilimanjaro with the riddle of his uncle. By his side is his newlywed wife Helen (Susan Hayward), who cares for him attentively. Harry is tormented by illness, sinking into hallucinations and reflecting on his life. In his youth, he was determined to become a writer. His uncle told him that a writer must have tenacity and endure long years of unwavering belief. Harry, who had just settled in Paris with his newlywed wife Cynthia (Ava Gardner), a young man unable to settle down, ventured out searching for experiences to inspire his writing. Tragically, his beloved Cynthia did not inform him of her miscarriage to spare him the guilt. When he learns the truth, he unfairly lashes out at Cynthia, causing her to leave in sorrow. After losing Cynthia, Harry meets Countess Liz — a duchess of high society, and gets lost in a life of excess. By the time he has a realization, his uncle has passed away, leaving behind the riddle for him to seek out answers and find himself. During this time in Paris, he encounters Helen, who bears a striking resemblance to Cynthia. At this point, Harry is already exhausted, and although Helen knows Harry does not love her, she remains deeply devoted. She accompanies him to the foot of Kilimanjaro in search of the answers to life.
