In a run-down apartment on the top floor of an old building, two struggling roommates for the sake of art, Roger (Adam Pascal) and Mark (Anthony Rapp), live together. Mark has recently gone through a breakup; his girlfriend Maureen left him for Joanne, who is attracted to women. Mark's previous roommate, Tom (Jesse L. Martin) — a computer whiz and an HIV carrier — was unfortunate enough to be robbed and battered, but he was rescued by a gay street drummer, Angel (Wilson Jermaine Heredia), and they quickly fell in love. Roger meets his neighbor Mimi (Rosario Dawson), who came to borrow a match; Mimi is a stripper. Soon, Roger discovers that he and Mimi share the same secret and illness — AIDS, and they fall in love through their shared suffering. The three couples are about to spend a Christmas Eve without heat, without electricity, relying only on candles to keep warm due to their inability to pay rent.
