Adventurer and journalist Simon Reeve sets off for Vietnam to uncover the story behind our morning pick-me-up. Millions of cups of coffee are consumed by the British each week, but how many know where their coffee comes from? The answer is not Brazil, Colombia, or Jamaica, but Vietnam! Eighty percent of the coffee consumed by the British is not cappuccino or latte, but instant coffee, with Vietnam being their largest supplier. Thirty years ago, Vietnam's coffee production accounted for a tiny fraction of the world's output, but after the Vietnam War, the government decided to plant coffee on a large scale. Today, Vietnam is the world's second-largest coffee producer. The coffee industry provides jobs for millions and has led a few individuals to become millionaires from scratch. However, Simon also discovers that the rapid development in Vietnam has come at a heavy cost to local residents and the environment.
