Steve Coogan, known for "Greed" and "The Bounty," has confirmed his role in the BBC1 drama "The Reckoning," taking on a controversial "scandal-type" story. The project has faced scrutiny since its development was confirmed in October 2020, but with Steve's lead casting confirmation, the series remains on track. The series focuses on the story of Jimmy Savile, a prominent TV personality and veteran music show host who enjoyed many accolades, including recognition from the British Empire Medal. However, after his death at 84 in 2011, a 2012 documentary investigation revealed uglier truths: he had been engaging in inappropriate conduct with minors since the 1960s. The BBC's complicity and the poor cultural environment at the time allowed him to act with impunity, extending his reach to more young women, including a 75-year-old woman with mental disabilities; over 450 complaints and reports emerged regarding his actions. A 2016 investigation even indicated that 11 of the victims were under the age of 12. Jeff Pope, who collaborated with Steve on "Stan & Ollie" and is also the lead writer of this series, believes it is a story worth retelling. It is not only about the wrongdoing but also examines why Jimmy was able to escape accountability in life.
