The Hulu limited series "Catch-22" is set to premiere all episodes on May 17 in the US. Produced by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content, the series is based on the novel of the same name by Joseph Heller, with George Clooney, Grant Heslov, and Ellen Kuras each directing two episodes. The limited series is written by Luke Davies and David Michôd, telling the story of protagonist Yossarian (played by Christopher Abbott) during World War II in Italy. Due to Colonel Cathcart's (played by Kyle Chandler, originally portrayed by George Clooney) personal issues, he forces his subordinate flying squadron to carry out dangerous flying missions incessantly. Yossarian initially attempts to feign insanity to avoid the missions, but he is informed that the so-called Catch-22 states that while madmen can be exempt from flying, they must apply for it themselves. However, the act of "self-applying" proves that the applicant is rational and does not wish to die, thus rendering the rule effectively meaningless. Hugh Laurie plays Major de Coverley, the squadron executive officer at the Pianosa airbase. Noble and strong, he has his own way of doing things, spending time throwing horseshoes, listening to jazz on a phonograph, making his own martinis, and finding apartments for officers when American forces occupy new cities. George Clooney originally played Colonel Cathcart but changed to the role of Scheisskopf, the training commander at the military academy, to focus on directing and producing. Scheisskopf is a humorless, ambitious but incompetent, furious abuser. While at the academy, he made others feel like they were in hell, but fundamentally he is just an angry fool, so he normally wouldn't be sent to the front lines overseas... However, he is appointed as the combat officer in the local Mediterranean theater, once again putting Yossarian in distress. Other cast members include Giancarlo Giannini (as Marcello), Daniel David Stewart (Milo), Rafi Gavron (Aarfy), Austin Stowell (Nately), Graham Patrick Martin (Orr), Gerran Howell (Kid Sampson), Jon Rudnitsky (McWatt), Kevin J. O'Connor (Korn), Pico Alexander (Clevinger), Tessa Ferrer (Nurse Duckett), Lewis Pullman (Major Major), Josh Bolt (Dunbar), Jay Paulson (Chaplain), Julie Ann Emery (Marion), and Grant Heslov (Doc Daneeka).
