Melanie (Michelle Pfeiffer) is a single mother who struggles to find a balance between work and her son, which leaves her under great pressure. Jack (George Clooney) is a columnist, and the sudden arrival of his daughter overwhelms this new father. A school field trip saves the two adults from their struggles; free from the constraints of their children, Melanie can finally focus all her attention on a big client, while Jack can dive into reporting on the mayoral election news. Unfortunately, things do not go as planned, as the two children miss the ferry for the field trip, meaning that the responsibility of watching over them will completely fall on the parents during this crucial time. Moreover, in the chaos, Melanie and Jack accidentally swap phones, leading to a series of frustrating troubles, but at the same time, a wonderful romance unexpectedly blooms.
