Between the airport, highway, and banks of the Danube River in the Simmering district of Vienna, lies a world made of reinforced walls and shabby barracks, the shelter for about 3,000 refugees from 22 countries, known as Macondo. Eleven-year-old Ramasan has escaped from Chechnya with his mother and two sisters seeking asylum; his father died in the conflict between Chechnya and Russia — at least, that is what he has been told. Ramasan does his best to fill his father's role, taking care of his sisters and helping his mother with her headscarf.
