In a German town, the sinister Dr. Caligari (played by Werner Krauss) is finally permitted to perform his hypnotism act. University students Francis (played by Friedrich Feher) and Alan (played by Hans Heinrich von Twardowski) come to watch. The mad Dr. Caligari demonstrates how he hypnotizes and controls his partner Cesare (played by Conrad Veidt), announcing that Cesare can answer any questions the audience has. Curious, Alan asks, "How long will I live?" The morbid Cesare responds, "Until tomorrow morning." Francis doesn't believe him, but Alan is terrified. Soon after, Alan is indeed killed. Francis informs his good friend Jenny (played by Lil Dagover) and her doctor father. They begin a wide-ranging pursuit, but the astonishing secret is intricately woven; who is the real murderer? This film is one of the most discussed in the history of world cinema and is a landmark of German Expressionist cinema. With its bizarre expressionistic style, it became the prototype for later Western horror films. In 1958, this film was ranked 12th in the "Top 12 World Films" by 117 film historians from 26 countries in Brussels, Belgium.
