In 1975, Philadelphia, America is economically depressed, and the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL lack motivation, suffering repeated defeats and boos from the fans. However, this doesn’t stop Vince Papale (played by Mark Wahlberg) and a group of old friends from enjoying the fun of football, even though his own life is quite unsatisfactory—he has been semi-unemployed for years, his wife recently left him, and he can only make a living working in a bar. The Eagles hire a new coach, Dick Vermeil (played by Greg Kinnear), to reverse their fortunes, and he proposes a tryout for new players from all over Philadelphia. At 30 years old, Vince no longer harbors unrealistic fantasies about life, but he is still encouraged by his friends, especially his bar owner’s cousin, Janet (played by Elizabeth Banks), to participate in the tryouts and becomes the only selected practice squad player. The training life is incredibly tough, and working with these physically gifted players requires firm belief. Vince’s self-doubt is repeatedly dispelled by his friends, and he ultimately aims to restore the dignity and hope of life for this city and for himself.
