In 1936, a young British man named Chai Scott (played by Hugh Dancy) follows his father's orders to arrive in the British colony of Saruwela, where the native chief, Belance, warmly welcomes the foreigner and assigns him a special maid – “The Dictionary Lover” Selima (played by Jessica Alba). In addition to attending to his daily needs, she is tasked with being his language teacher, and gradually, the two develop feelings for each other. When Chai Scott discusses “The Dictionary Lover” with British officer Henry (played by Bob Hoskins), he is vehemently advised not to break the law. Subsequently, his parents arrange a marriage for him, and his fiancée arrives in this land to begin her new life with him. Ultimately, Chai Scott faces a painful decision: to follow tradition or to break with convention...
