Set in 1860 Sicily, Italy, the film centers on Prince Salina's inner journey, reflecting the inevitable decline of the old aristocracy and nobility amidst the turbulent social changes brought about by the arrival of a new era. Prince Salina's family initially lives a quiet life. However, with the rapid changes in the political landscape, his nephew Tancredi aligns himself with the young Italian nationalist Garibaldi's troops landing in Sicily. Returning home, Tancredi falls in love at first sight with Angelica, the daughter of Mayor Sedara, and they become engaged shortly thereafter. Sedara agrees to provide a generous dowry for his daughter, thereby rescuing the declining Salina family, while he himself revels in the prospect of connecting with the nobility. Subsequently, a referendum is held in Sicily, unanimously supporting unification with Italy. Turin sends an envoy inviting Salina, as a representative of the nobility, to participate in parliamentary work, but Salina declines. The new government fails to bring any changes to this island that has been stagnant for over two thousand years; particularly after Garibaldi's defeat, life in Palermo's high society returns to its old ways, with the nobles frequently hosting balls, celebrating their survival.
