During the Tokugawa Shogunate, in a certain domain in Shinshu. The lord's wife dies crazily, and on her deathbed, she entrusts her baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and her beloved dog to her trusted maid, A-hsin (played by Yukiko Komura). Three years later, A-hsin, who has never had contact with a man, gives birth to a baby boy. The domain is abuzz with rumors, even claiming that the baby was born of A-hsin and the dog, thus naming him Banpei. Soon, Banpei is sent to be raised by an ordinary farming family. Fast forward 23 years, Banpei (played by Raizo Ichikawa) has grown into a handsome young man. Before his adoptive father's death, he is instructed to acquire unparalleled skills in order to thrive in this harsh world. Subsequently, Banpei is summoned to the city to work as a gardener, where his naturally unmatched physical abilities gain wide attention. Furthermore, with his outstanding intelligence, he masters the swordsmanship of the renowned expert Miichiro Daigo (played by Asao Uchida). Meanwhile, turmoil arises in the domain regarding the issue of succession, forcing the kind-hearted Banpei to transform into a cold-blooded assassin...
