During the Tokugawa Shogunate, in a certain domain in Shinshu. The lord's wife dies crazily, and on her deathbed, she entrusts her baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and her beloved dog to her trusted maid, A-hsin (played by Yukiko Komura). Three years later, A-hsin, who has never had contact with a man, gives birth to a baby boy. The domain is abuzz with rumors, even claiming that the baby was born of A-hsin and the dog, thus naming him Banpei. Soon, Banpei is sent to be raised by an ordinary farming family.
