In a refugee camp in Peshawar, Pakistan, Afghan teenager Jamal struggles to survive alongside tens of thousands of his compatriots in a life marked by extremely limited international aid and meager wages. Many refugees attempt to smuggle themselves to Europe in search of a better life. Jamal's cousin plans to go to London, UK, to make a living. After paying a substantial fee to smugglers, and since Jamal speaks a little English, his cousin takes him along. The two travel overland through Iran and Turkey, enduring detentions by Iranian police, working to earn travel expenses, and hiding in fruit transport trucks. They finally board a cargo ship heading to Europe, but the long journey claims the lives of his cousin and others, leaving Jamal to navigate the unfamiliar European continent alone... This film features real refugees in all roles to create an authentic documentary atmosphere. It won the Golden Bear at the 2003 Berlin International Film Festival and several other professional accolades.
