This film is adapted from the novella of the same name by Eileen Chang. Tong Zhenbao (Zhao Wenxuan) is a man known for his good reputation, but after meeting his old classmate, the charming Wang Jiaorui (Chen Chong), he becomes confused. However, when Wang Jiaorui offers him her sincere heart, he lacks the courage to bear the blame and escapes at the last minute. Following his mother's wishes, Zhenbao marries the seemingly simple Meng Yanli (Ye Yuqing), a woman he is not fond of, but unable to satisfy his desires, he begins to seek prostitutes outside, leaving his marriage unfulfilling. As Zhenbao and Yanli’s life spirals out of control, he unexpectedly encounters Jiaorui again.
