During the harsh winter, Kaji is dispatched to the North Manchuria garrison. After days of forced training, he is exhausted and has to endure the bullying from the veteran soldiers. However, he is among the best in terms of physical strength and shooting skills, quickly becoming an important soldier in the unit, and he takes a protective stance towards the younger soldiers. The friends Kaji protects include First Class Private Shinjo, who is considered a red element because his brother is a leftist political prisoner. There is also Second Class Private Kobara, who wavers after receiving a letter from his wife scolding him for being foolish about the family, and a 40-year-old conscripted veteran. Kaji helps Shinjo escape to the Soviet Union, while Kobara commits suicide in the bathroom. Kaji's wife travels a great distance to visit him at the unit. They receive special permission to spend the night in the tool warehouse. Later, due to the Soviet Union entering the war, Kaji's unit is completely annihilated by Soviet tank troops, leaving only a few survivors, including Kaji.
