Wang Ping (played by Wu Wei), who runs a small bookstore in Nanjing, is having an affair with a gay man, Jiang Cheng (played by Qin Hao), behind the back of his wife, Lin Xue (played by Jiang Jiaqi). Suspicious of her husband's behavior, Lin Xue hires Luo Haitao (played by Chen Sicheng) to follow Wang Ping, discovering Jiang Cheng's whereabouts. An angry Lin Xue causes a scene at the travel company where Jiang Cheng works, forcing him to break up with Wang Ping. Luo Haitao has a girlfriend, Li Jing (played by Tan Zhuo), who works in a garment factory, but he develops feelings for Jiang Cheng during the surveillance. Luo Haitao begins dating the heartbroken Jiang Cheng, and their relationship grows increasingly intimate, but at the same time, he struggles to let go of Li Jing. During a trip involving all three, Li Jing discovers the ambiguous relationship between Luo Haitao and Jiang Cheng, leading her to cry in sadness. In a city, many people walk a rugged road in love. This film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and won the Best Screenplay Award.
