White history teacher Dan Dunne (played by Ryan Gosling) teaches at a run-down public middle school in Brooklyn, New York, where most of his students are Black. Dan is passionate and creative, loves his students, does not follow the official curriculum, and believes in Hegelian dialectics, seeing history as fundamentally shaped by opposing forces. He brings the dry pages of history to life, encouraging students to think critically about history and the workings of their world, with students becoming Dan's lifeline in society. At night, he is an incurable drug addict. This divided life cannot last long, as Dan is discovered in a deserted girls' locker room by his Black female student, Drey (played by Shareeka Epps), after he collapses from using drugs. The shared dark secret brings them closer and changes their lives.
