The film is based on an article by Franklin Foer published in The New York Times Magazine, focusing on a man who flatters the powerful, Albrecht Muth (played by Waltz), who seduces and successfully marries an older rich woman, Viola Drath (played by Redgrave). The two married in 1990, when the man was 26 and the woman was 71. Muth ascended into high society through Drath, while his true motives remained hidden until 2011 when Drath was found dead in their Georgetown home. Muth was convicted of first-degree murder in 2014 and sentenced to 50 years in prison with no chance of parole.
