"This Is How We Get In" tells the story of four outstanding women who, during the 2018 midterm elections, broke the balance of power by entering local elections to confront powerful incumbents, showcasing a refreshing and inspiring scene. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, born in the Bronx, faced difficulties as her family struggled during the financial crisis, forcing her to work two bartender shifts to avoid losing their home to foreclosure. Amy Vilela lost a loved one to a preventable disease and was filled with anger over the fragmented healthcare system in America, yet did not know what to do about it. Cori Bush, a registered nurse and pastor, took to the streets when police shot and killed an unarmed Black man, prompting protests and tanks to roll into her community. Paula Jean Swearengin, the daughter of a coal miner, was fed up with watching loved ones suffer from the environmental impacts of coal mining. "This Is How We Get In" won the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary and the Audience Favorite Award at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, telling the story of four remarkable women joining the campaign trail during a historically tumultuous time in American politics. They mobilized supporters, attracted voters, and launched a movement. The film is directed by Rachel Lears ("The Hand that Feeds"), with Lears and Robin Blotnick ("The Hand that Feeds") as writers, and Lears, Blotnick, and Sarah Olson ("Sweet Burden") as producers. Ryan Blotnick ("The Hand that Feeds") provided the score.
