Harvey Milk, a gay politician recognized as one of the 20th century's most significant figures by Time magazine. In 1970, Sean Penn portrays Milk, a small businessman who, at nearly 40, finds success in his career but struggles in his romantic life. He encounters the young and handsome Scott Smith (James Franco) and they quickly fall in love, leading Milk to recognize his true sexual orientation. Shortly thereafter, they move to Castro Street in San Francisco and open a photography shop together.
