Harvey Milk, a gay politician recognized as one of the 20th century's most significant figures by Time magazine. In 1970, Sean Penn portrays Milk, a small businessman who, at nearly 40, finds success in his career but struggles in his romantic life. He encounters the young and handsome Scott Smith (James Franco) and they quickly fall in love, leading Milk to recognize his true sexual orientation. Shortly thereafter, they move to Castro Street in San Francisco and open a photography shop together. As their relationship becomes public, the small store gradually transforms into a gathering place for the LGBTQ community, eventually expanding throughout the neighborhood. However, at that time, homosexuality was still not accepted by the public, and they faced various injustices. Feeling compelled to act, Milk decides to enter politics, running for city supervisor with the aim of improving conditions for the LGBTQ community. After many defeats, he finally achieves success, but also faces criticism and attacks from conservative forces... The film won the 2009 Oscar for Best Actor (Sean Penn) and Best Original Screenplay, as well as the 2009 Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (James Franco).
