In 18th century Louisiana, plantation owner Louis (played by Brad Pitt), devastated by the loss of his wife and daughter, encounters the vampire Lestat (played by Tom Cruise), who transforms him into a vampire through his powers. Louis retains his humanity and refuses to kill humans for blood, sustaining himself on the blood of animals, while Lestat is determined to teach Louis to fully embrace his vampire nature. In New Orleans, Louis succumbs to temptation and drinks the blood of a young girl, Claudia (played by Kirsten Dunst), and Lestat, disregarding Louis's objections, turns Claudia into a vampire as well. The three form a peculiar family. Decades pass, and Claudia begins to resent Lestat for robbing her of a natural life. She plots to kill Lestat, and together with Louis, they travel the world, living as both father and daughter and lovers, seeking out others like themselves and exploring the meaning of their existence. In Paris, they encounter a group of vampires led by Armand (played by Antonio Banderas), who live a life starkly different from theirs in the theater's underground. Armand offers Louis much guidance and desires to become his new companion, creating a rift between Louis and Claudia, ultimately leading to an irreparable tragedy. In 1988, Louis returns to New Orleans and shares his experiences with a young reporter, Malloy (played by Christian Slater), revealing the sorrow behind the vampire's immortality. Unexpectedly, Malloy becomes deeply fascinated, setting the stage for a new vampire story to begin.
