The fourth season of the Emmy Award-winning series "Hell on Wheels," one of the highest-rated contemporary American Western series, will return on August 3 Beijing time, extended to 13 episodes. This year will feature a special broadcast format: the first part will air from August 3 to October 5, followed by a placeholder for AMC's movie program "AMC FearFest," with the remaining three episodes of the second part returning on November 9. The change in producers, adjustment of the main storyline, and move to a less competitive Saturday timeslot significantly improved the viewership and media ratings for Season 3: the average live three-day playback viewership for Season 3 was 3.3 million, a 37.5% increase compared to Season 2 (2.4 million) and a 10% increase over Season 1 (3 million), while also boosting AMC's Saturday prime time viewership by 97% and overall viewership by 152%. Season 3 of "Hell on Wheels" was the show's highest-rated season and received the best critical acclaim on Metacritic and AVclub, becoming the fifth production rated above 70 by media critics for AMC, following "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," "The Walking Dead," and the nominated series "The Killings." It is also AMC's first 13-episode series since "The Killings." At the end of Season 3, Cullen Bohannon (played by Anson Mount) marries Naomi, who is carrying his child, and settles into his wife's Mormon family. In this Mormon stronghold, the miraculously surviving Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) continues to pretend to be a church leader; Thomas "Doc" Durant (Colm Meaney) returns to serve as the head of the Union Pacific Railroad Company, and has pushed their railroad terminus west to Cheyenne; Elam (played by Common) is ambushed by a grizzly bear while searching for the missing Cullen and suffers serious injuries. In Season 4, modern civilization continues to move westward with the construction of the railroad, and those with ulterior motives include not only the killers of the past but also newspaper journalists. The series will remain focused on the interests of the government, railroad companies, ranchers, and farmers surrounding the "gem on the Great Plains," Cheyenne, and the most important railroad transport hub in the U.S. This season will also introduce several new characters, including John Campbell (played by Jake Weber, known for "Medium" and "Killing Them Softly"). "Hell on Wheels" is produced by John Wirth, who has also worked on "Falling Skies," "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," and "Blindspot," with Mark Richard, Jeremy Gold, and Paul Kurta serving as co-producers. AMC will replicate the approach of Season 3 to boost viewership for Season 4 by scheduling a full day of Western films on Saturdays, including "The Horse Whisperer," "Terminator Genisys," "The Revenant," and a purchased miniseries "Into the West."
