Wealthy Mississippi plantation owner "Big Daddy" (played by Burl Ives) is preparing to celebrate his sixty-fifth birthday, with his two sons, Cooper (played by Jack Carson) and Blake (played by Paul Newman), each bringing their wives to the birthday party. However, "Big Daddy" is unaware that he is suffering from cancer and will not live much longer. The elder son Cooper, a lawyer managing a large estate, has several children with his wife Mae (played by Madeleine Sherwood) and is eager to inherit his father's million-dollar fortune. In contrast to his brother's seemingly perfect life, Blake, once a football star, is drowning in alcohol. Since the suicide of an old friend a year ago, he has refused to share a bed with his virtuous wife Maggie (played by Elizabeth Taylor), suspecting that she had an affair with his late friend. Disillusioned with everything, Blake begins to question the meaning of life. This film is adapted from the play of the same name by Tennessee Williams and received 11 nominations, including the Oscars, Golden Globe Awards, and BAFTA Awards in 1959.
