Fulton (played by Charles Coburn) is a quirky artist who has never married and has no descendants, living alone in a room in the Blaisdell house. Once, he was a penniless nobody who fell in love with Mr. Blaisdell's mother, but unfortunately, they never ended up together. Now, Fulton has grown old and wants to leave his fortune to this family, though he is unsure if his choice is right, so he decides to give them a small test. Fulton secretly gives the family a huge sum of $100,000, which makes Mrs. Blaisdell extremely happy. She decides to use the money to improve their living conditions and encourages her daughter Millicent (played by Piper Laurie) to break up with her incompetent boyfriend Dan (played by Rock Hudson) and find a wealthy husband.
