Carrie (played by Jennifer Jones) comes from a remote and impoverished mountain village. After growing up, she arrives in the bustling metropolis of Chicago, hoping to live the life of her dreams. However, reality is harsh, and her tight finances force her to live on the generosity of others. By chance, Carrie meets a man named Drouet (played by Eddie Albert) on a train; he is wealthy and generous, and she quickly begins a cohabitation with him.
