Carrie (played by Jennifer Jones) comes from a remote and impoverished mountain village. After growing up, she arrives in the bustling metropolis of Chicago, hoping to live the life of her dreams. However, reality is harsh, and her tight finances force her to live on the generosity of others. By chance, Carrie meets a man named Drouet (played by Eddie Albert) on a train; he is wealthy and generous, and she quickly begins a cohabitation with him. Later, Carrie meets the hotel owner Hurstwood (played by Laurence Olivier), and finally lives the luxurious, extravagant life she always dreamed of. But this good fortune does not last long, as an accident leaves Hurstwood destitute. Just as the two are struggling, Carrie secures a job at the opera house, where she quickly rises to fame thanks to her beauty and singing talent. Faced with her sudden wealth and fame, Carrie decides to abandon Hurstwood.
