During the Anti-Japanese War, there was a ragtag army composed of people from various walks of life, claiming to be the newly formed Third Regiment, led by the former county magistrate Duan Renyi (played by Lei Kesheng). To train this disorganized group, the Kuomintang sent two professional soldiers, Chief of Staff Fang Xianggong (played by Yuan Yuan) and Staff Officer Tan (played by Tan Zengwei), and assigned a wireless operator, Bai Jiefen (played by Gong Zhu), to stay with the team and communicate with the higher-ups. Due to the chaotic composition of the troops, various disciplinary violations emerged, but there was some improvement after disciplinary measures were implemented. With the enemy approaching and the main forces of the Nationalist Army retreating, the new Third Regiment was ordered to stay behind and resist, leading to dire consequences.
