In 1916, the European battlefield of World War I was in a stalemate. Lieutenant Woodward (played by Brendan Cowell) from Australia took over a demolition team in a dimly lit tunnel. Eighteen months earlier, Woodward was far from the battlefield, engaged in mining demolition work in Papua, gradually establishing a relationship with his young girlfriend.
