In late 19th century Edinburgh, on a bitterly cold winter day, a suffering pregnant woman seeks out the doctor known as the witch, Madame Marie (voiced by Marie Vincent). Soon after, a frail baby is born, but his heart is frozen. To save him, Madame Marie installs a mechanical heart. The child's biological mother disappears without a word, and Madame Marie raises him as her own son, naming him Jack (voiced by Mathias Malzieu). She warns Jack not to get angry and to avoid strong emotional outbursts, especially falling in love. Young Jack grows day by day, and on his tenth birthday, he ventures into town where he encounters the angel of his destiny.
