The story takes place in 16th century France, where the young heiress Marie (played by Mélanie Thierry) falls in love with the frighteningly handsome but gentle Count de Chabannes (played by Gaspard Ulliel). Unfortunately, this romance, which does not align with social standings, is destined to yield no results. Under her father's authoritarian reign, Marie ultimately marries Prince de Montpensier (played by Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet), whom she has never even met. Shortly after their marriage, the prince is called to the frontlines, entrusting Marie's safety to Count de Chabannes (played by Lambert Wilson), hoping he can protect her from the ravages of war. In the emptiness and loneliness, Marie unexpectedly reunites with the Count, and their long-suppressed passion becomes uncontrollable. Just at this critical moment, the prince returns to Marie's side, leaving her torn between two men, unsure of what choice is correct.
