Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) has long lost track of how long she has been on the throne; the days before her coronation feel like memories from a past life. The stuffy court life leaves Queen Victoria feeling exhausted, and the upcoming celebration of her fiftieth anniversary on the throne leaves this elderly woman feeling suffocated. During the celebration, Queen Victoria unexpectedly encounters a servant named Abdul (Ali Fazal), a vibrant young man who brings a refreshing feeling to the queen. Abdul, originally an ordinary office worker, has flown from India to England specifically to attend the celebration. His presence makes the queen realize that beyond her court lies a rich and colorful new world she had never imagined.
