After his marriage falls apart, newspaper columnist Felix (Jack Lemmon) is kicked out of his home. Left with no other option, he temporarily moves in with his friend Oscar (Walter Matthau), and the two longtime buddies become roommates. Oscar and Felix have completely opposite personalities; the former is eccentric and messy, while the latter is a neat freak who enjoys cooking. Although the two often bicker over trivial matters while "cohabiting," their lives gain a spark thanks to each other's presence. A pair of British sisters living next door further fuels their imagination. Despite Oscar's strong objections, Felix invites the sisters over, and surprisingly, the four of them get along well. However, when things begin to develop ideally, Oscar digs in his heels and refuses to continue, leading to an explosive confrontation between the frustrated Felix and his friend, putting their friendship in jeopardy.
