"The Great Escape by Land, Sea, and Air" is directed by Lamont Johnson and is a co-production of Ireland and the UK. The story is set in a German POW camp located in Scotland. Clever Irish spy Jack Connor is sent undercover into this camp. The command suspects that the German prisoners are deliberately causing riots to distract attention from their plan to execute a massive escape. Shortly after entering the camp, Jack uncovers some clues from the mumblings of a fellow prisoner, but that prisoner is soon strangled. As the investigation deepens, Jack suspects submarine commander Schacht is the mastermind behind it all. Consequently, Jack provokes other prisoners to turn in Schacht in exchange for freedom. Unfortunately, his plans spiral out of control, and the German prisoners do initiate a great escape. The film's conclusion is quite dramatic: the German general Schacht, who orchestrated the entire breakout, does not escape, but most of his subordinates successfully flee. Brian Keith delivers an excellent performance as the seemingly drunken but astute spy, and the cat-and-mouse game between him and Schacht, played by Helmut Grimm, is quite thrilling.
