On July 15, 1988, a university is filled with the excitement of graduation. Amidst this enthusiasm, the carefree Dexter (played by Jim Sturgess) navigates through the crowd, searching for a beauty to share this last night of revelry and romance. He sets his sights on Emma (played by Anne Hathaway), a smart girl from a working-class background. However, after a brief exchange, nothing happens between them, yet it is destined to change their lives forever. Over the years, they drift in and out of each other's lives as friends, sharing the bittersweet experiences and various insights of life. Dexter experiences the ups and downs of career and marriage, while Emma endures the hardships of a lower-class existence.
