On July 15, 1988, a university is filled with the excitement of graduation. Amidst this enthusiasm, the carefree Dexter (played by Jim Sturgess) navigates through the crowd, searching for a beauty to share this last night of revelry and romance. He sets his sights on Emma (played by Anne Hathaway), a smart girl from a working-class background. However, after a brief exchange, nothing happens between them, yet it is destined to change their lives forever.
