The story takes place in 1946, after the war has ended. Ivan (John Savage) is released from a German POW camp and returns to his hometown, where everything has changed. Ivan has always thought about his first love, Maria (Nastassja Kinski), but by this time, she has a boyfriend, El (Vincent Spano). Ivan doesn't blame Maria; he simply feels sad. One night, Ivan invites Maria out, and they finally unravel their feelings for each other. After that, Maria breaks up with El and walks into marriage with Ivan. The trauma from the war prevents Ivan from having sex with Maria, which leaves the newlywed couple feeling extremely frustrated. Strangely, when Ivan ends up in bed with Mrs. Vainich (Anita Morris), he can perform.
