The story takes place during World War II, where American officer Ryan (played by Frank Sinatra) becomes a prisoner of war and is held in a camp located in Italy, alongside over six hundred British POWs. Ryan's wisdom and kindness quickly earn him the admiration of the prisoners, and he becomes the camp's de facto "leader." Life in the camp is filled with pain and oppression, and as time passes, thoughts of escape begin to surface among the prisoners. However, with strict German guards, escaping is easier said than done, and the captives place their hopes and dreams in Ryan. Can Ryan, burdened with their trust, accomplish this seemingly impossible task? It's important to note that if the plan fails, the only outcome they face is death.
