The story takes place during World War II, where American officer Ryan (played by Frank Sinatra) becomes a prisoner of war and is held in a camp located in Italy, alongside over six hundred British POWs. Life in the camp is filled with pain and oppression, and as time passes, thoughts of escape begin to surface among the prisoners.
