Charlie (played by Adam Sandler) is a direct victim of 9/11, having lost his wife, children, and beloved dog in the disaster. Since then, Charlie has fallen into a state of despair, suffering from severe depression and social withdrawal. He has become accustomed to roaming the streets daily on an electric scooter, wearing large headphones, living like a zombie. The immense emotional trauma has rendered him incapable of returning to a normal life. Allen (played by Don Cheadle) appears to be a very happy man on the surface, with a successful career and a loving family; however, the pressures of life he bears are incomprehensible to ordinary people, and he secretly struggles inside. Until one day, Allen encounters Charlie on the street. After learning why this old classmate has become so despondent, Allen resolves to help him find his way out of the abyss. They talk, play games together, and slowly discover that their souls are awakening from suffocation.
