"Roman Mama" (played by Anna Magnani) brings her sixteen-year-old son Ettore (played by Ettore Garofolo) from the countryside to the city. Having not seen his mother for many years, Ettore appears shy and frustrated. The mother plays music in the house and invites her son to dance the tango together. She sells vegetables and fruits at the city market, always warning Ettore not to hang out with bad company. Ettore, introduced by a friend, falls for a prostitute who already has a child and sells his mother's old records to buy gifts for her. The mother is very worried when she learns of this and asks a friend to help seduce Ettore to make him forget the prostitute. She also helps her son find a job, and seeing him get back on track makes her happy. However, at this time, the former pimp of Roman Mama finds her and uses her painful past to blackmail money from her, forcing Roman Mama to reluctantly return to her old profession...
