Brandon (played by Hilary Swank) arrives in Falls City and becomes the local heartthrob, popular among women. However, he harbors a secret—this handsome man is actually a woman. His real name is Teena, who has struggled with a lack of recognition of her identity as a female. She enjoys being male and decides to start a new role and a new life in this unfamiliar city. Brandon falls in love with local girl Lana (played by Chloë Sevigny) and even becomes friends with her ex-boyfriend—despite their rough, drunken, and violent behavior, accepted Brandon finds a sense of belonging. Life seems to be heading in the direction Brandon desires until a traffic violation reveals all her secrets. Brandon is outed as female; although Lana forgives her, tragedy strikes. Lana's ex-boyfriend becomes furious with Brandon, leading to a brutal act of violence that destroys her.
