In the magnificent scenery of Hokkaido, the weathered couple Kobayashi Atsushi (played by Koichi Sato) and Yoshiko (played by Kanako Higuchi) arrives. They once ran a machine manufacturing factory, but were forced to close it due to poor management. Yoshiko senses her husband’s disappointment and asks Atsushi to build a stone wall for their Western-style detached house. One night, a thief breaks into their home, and Yoshiko gets injured in the encounter. The doctor advises her to pay attention to her dilated cardiomyopathy, but Yoshiko conceals this fact from her husband and spends carefree, dreamlike moments with the young man Sugimoto Toru (played by Shuhei Nomura) and his girlfriend Saei (played by Hana Sugisaki), who come to help them build the stone wall. What must come will come; after holding hands for half a lifetime, there will always be a moment of farewell... This film is adapted from the 2002 novel "The Pearls of the Stone Man" by American author Edward Mooney, Jr. (Japanese translation: 石を積むひと).
